Scooting is a common behavior for all types of dogs, and for various reasons. French Bulldogs often scoot as a result of irritation and/or discomfort from an anal gland infection, constipation, or itchy skin. But regardless of the cause, it’s important to determine why and then address it promptly.
Why is My French Bulldog Scooting?
Anal Gland Infection
One common reason for scooting is due to an anal gland infection. The anal glands, also referred to as anal sacs, are glands located at the eight and tenth intercostal spaces in both dogs and cats. They are usually filled with small amounts of thick sebum and are released when the animal defecates or is excited. When these glands become impacted, they become uncomfortable and will usually cause your pet to scoot to try and alleviate the soreness.
Constipation
Another potential reason for scooting is due to constipation. Dogs, especially smaller breeds, may have difficulty passing their stool due to an intestinal obstruction or other health issue. This can cause pain and discomfort when eliminating, leading them to drag themselves across the floor in an attempt to alleviate the problem.
Itchy Skin
Finally, scooting may be caused by itchy skin, either from allergens, parasites, or other skin conditions. Your pet may be feeling itchy and trying to relieve the sensation, or the scratching may be causing discomfort in their anal area and prompting them to drag their hindquarters across the carpet.
No matter what the cause of your French Bulldog scooting may be, it’s important to take your pup to the vet to get a proper diagnosis and any necessary treatment. If the issue is something simple, such as an itchy skin condition, your vet can prescribe any necessary medications or recommend special shampoos. If the cause is one of the more serious issues, such as an anal gland infection or intestinal blockage, your vet can determine the best course of treatment.
If your French Bulldog is scooting, it is important to get to the bottom of the issue as soon as possible. It may be uncomfortable and cause your pup some discomfort, but it may also be indicative of a more serious underlying problem. Pay attention to your pup’s behavior and if you are concerned about anything, consult your veterinarian.
