French Bulldogs, or “Frenchie” as they have come to be known affectionately, are a relatively new breed of dogs. They are becoming increasingly popular due to their fun and loving personalities, as well as their distinctive mask-like faces. One universal trait of French Bulldogs that many people can’t help but be endearingly delighted by, is the Frenchie snort. This curious snort seems to come at any moment and can occur with hardly any provocation. But why do French Bulldogs snort?
Why Do French Bulldogs Snort?
French Bulldogs, like all dogs, have selective breeding histories that are directly linked to their physical and behavioral traits. Just over 150 years ago, during a period of time known as the “aesthetic craze,” a wave of cross-breeding took place with the English Bulldog and different types of French Terriers. This mix of breeds has contributed to the French Bulldog’s unique physical and behavioral features, including their famous snorts.
Specifically, the snort is caused epidemically by two factors.
Physical Feature: Short Muzzle
The most overriding factor that determines the correlation between French Bulldogs and snorting sound is its physical form. French Bulldogs are known for their distinctive masks, which are accentuated by their short muzzle and flat face. This level of extreme facial compression has resulted in a physical condition known as “Brachycephalic Syndrome” or “Brachy” for short. This disorder restricts air passage and interferes normal breathing. French Bulldogs, as a result, commonly exhibit irregular breathes and make sharp sounds while they are trying to catch their breath.
Personality: Easily Inspired
Another significant factor in the snorting sounds that French Bulldogs make is their personality. French Bulldogs are known for being particularly receptive to emotional stimulation. A French Bulldogs reaction to any situation, whether they are scared, shocked, animated or excited, is often energetic and extremely sensitive. This translates in frenzied protests of snorts, sometimes lasting for the duration of the emotional stimulation.
The “Frenchie snort” is a loud exclamation made by the French Bulldog breed that is caused by a combination of their physical features and their “overly sensitive” personality. French Bulldogs are known for their short muzzles and flat faces which can lead to breathing difficulties and a predisposition to snort. They are also naturally expressive creatures, and often let out a snort when they experience heightened levels of emotion.
Ultimately, regardless of why they snort, French Bulldogs are capable of producing an array of vocalizations that appear to be unpredictable. Whether they may be happy, excited, scared, or simply curious, their short snorts are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
