French Bulldogs, or “Frenchies” as they are affectionately known, have become a popular breed amongst dog lovers. But why are French Bulldogs so notoriously prone to health problems? From delicate respiratory systems to hereditary health issues, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into when you decide to bring a Frenchie into your home.
Respiratory Issues
Due to their compact size and distinctive “flat-faced” muzzle, French Bulldogs are often subject to issues with their respiratory system. Some of these problems include stenotic nares (the nostrils are too small), tracheal hypoplasia (the trachea, or windpipe, is too narrow), and elongated soft palate (part of the soft palate is too long). This makes their breathing particularly difficult and can make them prone to reverse sneezing and exercise-induced collapse.
Intervertebral Disc Disease
French Bulldogs, along with other short-nosed breeds, are more prone to a condition known as Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). IVDD is a condition in which the pads that act as a cushion between the discs that make up the spine become dehydrated and unable to perform their normal function. If left untreated, this can lead to paralysis and even death.
Eye Problems
French Bulldogs are also prone to eye issues due to their protruding eyes. Conditions such as dry eye, cherry eye, and entropion can all be present in French Bulldogs, which can lead to further uncomfortable and even dangerous eye problems.
Allergies
French Bulldogs’ sensitive skin often leaves them vulnerable to allergies. Depending on the individual dog, allergies can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms can include itching, sneezing, or even a rash or hives.
Hereditary Conditions
French Bulldogs, like many other breeds, can have genetic health problems that can range from mild to serious. Some of the more common genetic issues associated with French Bulldogs include: hip dysplasia, Elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, and spinal problems.
Despite their long list of possible health issues, French Bulldogs can be wonderful companions when well taken care of. If you do decide to own a French Bulldog, it’s essential that you provide your pup with the best care possible and regular trips to the vet to ensure their health and safety. With proper care, a Frenchie can be a great companion for many years to come.
