How Tall Do French Bulldogs Get?

French Bulldogs are one of the most popular breeds of dogs, known for their adorable and playful personalities. They have become a favorite for families, often appearing in family pictures and even in movie roles. While most people recognize their compact and intelligent features, many don’t know exactly how tall French Bulldogs can get.

    • French Bulldogs and the AKC Standard

    According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standard, French Bulldogs should stand at 11 – 12 inches high at the shoulders, when measured from the withers. This means that when standing on all-fours, their height should measure slightly less than a foot. The AKC also states that Frenchies should have a compact, muscular body, with a desirable body length-to-height ratio. The length of a French Bulldog’s body should measure between 10 – 12 inches.

    How Big Do They Get?

    When it comes to their weight, the AKC standard states that French Bulldogs should not exceed 28 pounds. Male French Bulldogs should have an average weight of 20 – 28 pounds, while females typically weigh between 16 – 24 pounds. Frenchies have thick bodies and commonly come in a range of colours, including white, black, brindle, or a mix of those colours.

    Variations in Size Among French Bulldogs

    Although the AKC sets the standard for French Bulldogs, it is natural for there to be variations among individual dogs. As a result, some French Bulldogs may be larger or smaller than the standard measurements. It is possible to find Frenchies that are taller than 12 inches at the shoulder, although this is not recommended. While taller Frenchies may be very desirable to some breeders, they cannot be shown in AKC events and they may be prone to certain medical issues.

    Common French Bulldog Medical Issues

    The extra size of taller French Bulldogs can increase the likelihood of some medical issues. These include:

    • Spinal Disc Herniation – Taller French Bulldogs are more likely to suffer from spinal disc herniation, which is a painful condition. This can cause pain, difficulty walking, and could even lead to paralysis.
    • Increasing Weight – Many French Bulldog owners struggle with their pup’s weight, as Frenchies can gain weight easily. Since tall pups typically have bigger bodies, they tend to gain more weight as they age. This can lead to an increased risk of canine obesity, reducing their lifespan.
    • Birth Complications – French Bulldogs require c-sections in order to give birth, as their heads are typically too large to pass through the birth canal. Taller Frenchies will tend to have abnormally large heads, increasing the likelihood of birth complications.

    Overall, French Bulldogs should measure 11-12 inches high at the shoulder, according to the AKC breed standard. If a French Bulldog is taller than that, it will likely suffer from some health issues and will not be able to compete in AKC events. While some people may be drawn to the look of taller French Bulldogs, it is important to remember that their health should take priority.
