French Bulldogs are known for many things – their comical personalities, their cute wrinkles and snorts, and their affectionate nature. But one aspect of owning a French Bulldog that may surprise some is how much they shed. While they’re certainly not the worst-shedding breed out there, they do still need some regular grooming to help keep the shedding at bay. So how bad is it, really?

French Bulldogs & Shedding
First, let’s back up a bit and define our terms here. When we talk about “shedding”, we are referring to the natural process of old, dead hair being pushed out and replaced by new, growing hair. Contrary to popular belief, most dogs that don’t shed don’t really have different shedding levels – they simply don’t lose their fur as often as other breeds.
French Bulldogs are known as an average-shedding breed, meaning that they can shed quite a bit depending on the time of year and the coat type. To get a better idea, let’s look at the different French Bulldog coat types and how their shedding levels vary.
Short Hair French Bulldogs
Short-coated French Bulldogs have the least amount of fur, and subsequently shed the least among French Bulldogs. Most short-haired Frenchies will still experience a moderate amount of seasonal shedding, meaning that they’ll need more frequent brushing during dog grooming sessions to help keep shedding hair to a minimum.
Long Hair French Bulldogs
Longer-haired French Bulldogs may experience more shedding than short-haired counterparts, but the amount can still be managed with proper grooming and coat care. As with all furry breeds, frequent brushing and combing is key to reducing shedding and preventing matting.
Wirehaired French Bulldogs
Wirehaired French Bulldogs go through a bit more of a shedding process than their short or long-haired counterparts. Their wiry coat has to be stripped of the old, dead hair on a regular basis, otherwise it can start to look matted and unkempt. Regular brushing and stripping of the wiry coat can reduce the shedding dramatically, however.
Care Tips for Preventing Shedding
No matter what coat type your French Bulldog has, there are a few care tips that can help keep shedding in check.
- Brush Often: Aim to brush every couple of days to help remove loose hair and keep the fur looking neat and tangle-free.
- Wash and Condition Regularly: Use a specially made dog shampoo and conditioner to help keep the skin and coat healthy.
- Keep Nails Trimmed: Long nails can trap shedding fur, so in addition to regular nail trimming, it’s a good idea to check between toes and at the wrists for trapped fur.
- Change Foods Carefully: Making sure your pup is eating a high-quality, balanced diet is important for healthy skin and coat.
